Rescuers may have clues

30/12/2004

POLICE are still looking for two men who could hold vital clues to the identity of a man who attacked a woman as she walked her dog on Army land.

The pair are believed to be soldiers because they were wearing camouflage clothing when they helped the 34 year old who was struggling with a male attacker.

The woman from Fleet had been walking her dog in Long Valley, off Fleet Road, Aldershot, on Tuesday December 7 when she was grabbed from behind by a man. As she screamed and fought him, the soldiers came to her rescue and the attacker ran away.

They helped her back to her car on Burn’s Plain and detectives believe they may have important information about the attack, which happened at about 7.15pm.

A spokesman for Aldershot police said although officers were not sure of the man’s motive, because he was disturbed, they could not rule out that it was sexual.

“The man is described as being white, aged around 35 to 40 years old and between 6ft 2ins and 6ft 4ins tall,” the spokesman said.

“He has dark straight hair that is not too short or too long and was clean shaven with a rough sounding voice.

“He wore a blue Puffa-style jacket and a dark crew-neck T-shirt with light coloured blue jeans and dirty white trainers.

“Although there is nothing to say that the motive was sexual, we can’t rule out that possibility.”

Officers are also looking at the possibility the attack is linked with a similar incident in Aldershot several weeks earlier.

On Monday November 15 a 33-year-old female jogger was grabbed from behind by a man who pinned her down and indecently assaulted her before she struggled free.

The woman had been running along a path at the back of Aldershot’s Territorial Centre, near Forge Lane, when the attacker came out from behind a bush and pulled her back towards him by her top. She fell to the ground but managed to escape from the attacker.

She was unable to give the police a description of the man as he struck from behind and it was dark at the time of the attack, about 7pm.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who may have seen someone hanging around the area at the time of the attack, or who saw a man following the jogger.

She was wearing a blue running jacket, black trousers and a woolly hat.

If anyone has information on either incident, please call Det Sgt Pauline Prior at Aldershot Police Station on 0845 0454545.
