Shrews chase Robinson

ALDERSHOT Town target Jake Robinson is attracting the interest of League Two rivals Shrewsbury Town.

Shrewsbury, who lost in the play-off final to Gillingham last weekend, are one of the richer sides in the division and the news that manager Paul Simpson is keen on the diminutive young striker is potentially not good news for Aldershot manager Gary Waddock.

The manager has very few funds to work with, despite an injection of cash being raised by Aldershot's loyal fans, and is very unlikely to be able to compete with Shrewsbury on a financial level.

“Robinson is a player I have wanted before,” Simpson told the Shrewsbury Chronicle newspaper. “I have spoken to his agent - but no more than that. We didn't talk about wages or anything like that.”

What Waddock does have to counter Shrewsbury's cash is Robinson's liking for Aldershot, after two spells on loan at the Rec from Brighton & Hove Albion, the second coming during the final three months of the season just gone. Robinson has since been released by Brighton.

While Robinson struggled for goals last season at the Rec, finding the net just four times, Waddock has declared that he wants to try and bring the forward to the Rec permanently, on the back of several energetic and skilful performances, especially in a 0-0 draw with Shrewsbury in March - in which he no doubt caught Simpson’s eye, as he looks for a new strike partner for Grant Holt.

Like Simpson, Waddock said earlier this month that he had been in contact with Robinson's agent and was waiting to hear back from him.

Waddock's current Aldershot squad contains three strikers: Danny Hylton, Marvin Morgan and John Grant.
