Football: Holdsworth upbeat amid goal drought
By Jon CouchJanuary 23, 2012
ALDERSHOT Town boss Dean Holdsworth insists his side are beginning to show signs of recovery despite failing to end their goal drought in their stalemate with Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
It's now 563 minutes since the Shots scored a league goal, prompting boss Holdsworth to delve into the transfer market and sign hitman Guy Madjo on an 18-month contract from Stevenage.
Cameroon-born Madjo has scored no fewer than eight goals in six games against Aldershot, including a hat-trick while on loan for Port Vale just last month.
But not even he could end the goal drought as Shots fans endured another frustrating afternoon at the EBB Stadium, albeit with a better all-round team performance.
Peter Vincenti hit the crossbar, while visiting keeper Ian Dunbavin pulled off two fine saves to deny Madjo and Danny Hylton as the Shots laid siege to the Stanley goal in the first half to no avail.
It wasn't quite so dominant after the break as the visitors slowly clawed their way back into the match, forcing Ross Worner into an acrobatic save to keep out Michael Smith.
But even though the Shots failed to trouble the new pitchside scoreboard with a net rippler, boss Holdsworth was confident that, with the aid of a little bit of luck, his Shots will start to find the net again and prevent their downward slide.
"The performance carried on from where we left off against Cheltenham," Holdsworth said. "There are a lot of positives from this game. I thought we were outstanding in the first half especially but the goal was what was missing.
"If we continue to perform like that week in, week out then we are not going to be putting ourselves under the pressure that we have because of not scoring goals.
"I came to the game in a good frame of mind and there was an excitement amongst the players and an excitement with Guy (Madjo) in our side. He will be a serious player for us. I said to the lads to remain positive. We will get better and we could do with a bit of lady luck too.
"The harder you work the luckier you get. That will turn. We had a clean sheet, worked well and it will come."
ALDERSHOT: Worner, Herd, Straker, T Brown, Jones, Collins, Guttridge (Payne 79), Vincenti, Henry (Mekki 77), Hylton, Madjo. Subs: Morris, Roberts, Bradley.

The game against Oxford was probably the worst I have seen Aldershot play in recent years, but since then they seem to have bucked their ideas up and they were easily the better side against Accrington. I was encouraged by the new signing Madjo. He had only been part of the team for a day or so, and still made a good account of himself. Fingers crossed that with some training with the rest of the team he will start knocking goals in with some regularity.
