Aldershot faithful 'can act as 12th man'

By Jon Couch

ASSISTANT boss Matt Bishop believes the EBB Stadium faithful are Aldershot Town’s 12th man in their bid to escape the doldrums.

The Shots will be looking to end a run of five consecutive league defeats when they entertain Steve Evans and his Rotherham United side on Saturday.

Bish’s boys were booed off after their last encounter at the EBB Stadium when they went down to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Chesterfield.

Now the No.2 is urging the fans to get behind the Shots on Saturday and play their part in ending the recent slump.

“It is important to get the support and encouragement,” Bishop said. “We want the fans to be positive and support the players. They have a big part to play and when we are rocking there are no better fans. They are the 12th man. We want to get the players going and believing and drive them on to get a result.

“It will click. We are getting there and everybody is desperate to get a result because we are all hurting.”

Holdsworth and Bishop put their league troubles aside on Tuesday night as a fringe XI progressed to the third round of the Hampshire Senior Cup with a 4-0 home victory over Alton Town, managed by former Shots’ favourite Colin Fielder.

The five-time winners went at their Wessex League opponents from the off and went in front on 17 minutes when Josh Payne’s corner was flicked on by Michael Rankine and the lively Kieran Cadagon slotted home into an empty net.

Rankine doubled the lead two minutes later after latching onto Payne’s delightful through ball, and it was soon 3-0 when Alex Rodman cut inside the Alton defence before firing past keeper Chris Atkinson.

Alton twice went close through Kal Al-Shantir and Liam Flanighan, but the Shots wrapped up a comfortable win four minutes from time with a tap-in from sub Adam Mekki.

ALDERSHOT: Williams, Douglas, Gerrard, Payne, Berqvist, Morris, Rodman, Donnelly, Rankine, Hylton, Cadagon. Subs: Mekki, Richards, Connolly, Brice, Cooksley.
