Vote my goal for my mate Cole, says Vincenti
By Jon CouchDecember 13, 2012
FA CUP hero Peter Vincenti is urging Aldershot Town fans to vote his wonder strike at Fleetwood last week as Goal of the Round – in memory of his great mate Mitchell Cole.
The Jersey-born midfield ace was left devastated last Saturday on hearing of the tragic death of his former Stevenage team-mate just hours before kick-off.
Yet still, the 27-year-old found it in himself to pull on the Aldershot shirt and capped an emotional afternoon with a stunning 35-yard strike which helped the Shots secure a 3-2 win and a place in the third round of the FA Cup.
Vincenti's strike is one of six nominations for Goal of the Round, with a club prize of £27,000 up for grabs for the winner.
But for Vincenti, getting that lucrative vote would be a fitting tribute to family friend Cole, who passed away with a heart condition at the age of just 27.
“I hope it does win because the goal was for Mitchell,” Vincenti said. “It would be fitting for the award to be dedicated to someone of his calibre.
“It’s not been an easy week. I was meant to meet up with him this coming Monday. We’re good friends and my missus gets on well with his wife Charley, so finding out the news was just heartbreaking.”
Vincenti joined in a minute’s applause for Cole at his former club Oxford United on Saturday where U’s fans clearly hold in him high esteem.
“Last week I had to put it all aside, so to come to his last club this week was just as difficult,” Vincenti added. “He’ll be sorely missed by a lot of people.”
Also up for an award is Shots’ two-goal hero Danny Hylton, who is one of five players shortlisted for the prestigious Player of the Round prize.
The winner receives an invite to the FA Cup Final in May as a guest of the FA and competition sponsors Budweiser.
Voting for both awards closes on Monday.
