Football: Boro boss rebuffed in strike bid
By Jon CouchJanuary 19, 2012
FARNBOROUGH boss Spencer Day has been dealt another transfer blow after a deal to bring Kingstonian hotshot Bobby Traynor back to Cherrywood Road fell through at the last minute.
Traynor, who spent a brief spell with the old Farnborough Town in 2005 before going on to join Maidenhead and the Ks, told Boro boss Day he was willing to join the club on an initial one month loan with view to a permanent transfer.
But the 28-year-old striker, who has scored 145 goals in 237 appearances for the Ks, announced today (Thursday) that he had had a change of heart and wanted to see out the four months remaining on his contract at Kingsmeadow.
Now Day is waiting to hear a final decision from his other transfer target, an experienced midfield player, as he looks to strengthen his relegation-threatened squad ahead of Saturday's tough trip to Welling United.
A Farnborough statement said: "Whilst the management is disappointed we only want players here that really want to play for Farnborough so we wish Bobby well and move on.
"We are hopeful that our number one player target will be signing later today and will be announced later."
On settling the club's debts and lifting the subsequent transfer embargo imposed by the Conference, Day delved swiftly into the transfer market in a bid to replace departing top scorer Reece Connolly.
On-loan Connolly took his league tally to 12 for the season with a clinical 36-minute hat-trick in Saturday’s 4-0 demolition of Boreham Wood – form which has prompted Aldershot Town boss Dean Holdsworth to recall him back to the EBB Stadium.
Day describes Connolly’s exit as a “massive, massive blow”, and few would disagree after the 19-year-old ripped through a leg weary Boreham Wood back line to help himself to a first-half treble.
Connolly put Boro in front as early as the third minute when his deflected 20-yard effort looped over ex-Boro keeper Michael Jordan.
He then made it 2-0 on 25 minutes when the industrious Nathan Webb crossed from the right and Connolly fired home under the body of a sprawling Jordan.
And a first senior hat-trick was complete from the penalty spot 13 minutes later after hewas crudely brought down in the box by Luke Wilkinson when running onto Marcus Moody's through ball.
Webb's tenacity on the edge of the box helped make it 4-0 to Boro on the stroke of half-time but, credit to Wood, they came out firing after the break and forced keeper Tom Lovelock into two crucial saves.
Boro right-back Miles Smith was sent off for a silly second bookable offence midway through the second half but Day’s men held on comfortably for a valuable win.
Smith’s one-game ban sees him sit out next Saturday’s visit of Basingstoke Town, so he is expected to keep his place in tomorrow's line-up, although captain Adam Bygrave is a doubt as he has gone down with a flu bug.
