Shock could be on the Cards, insists Boro boss Day

By Jon Couch

SPENCER DAY has insisted his Farnborough side will give rivals Woking “one hell of a go” when they lock horns with the Cards in an epic FA Trophy derby clash this Saturday.

Day’s free-scoring Boro will arrive at Kingfield on the crest of a wave after last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Staines Town at Cherrywood Road lifted them to the dizzy heights of fifth in the Blue Square South table.

In contrast, Garry Hill’s Woking are suffering something of a mid-season slump right now with just one win from their last seven matches.

But while Day accepts Boro are “massive underdogs” to triumph at Kingfield, the boss said his side would not be going to make up the numbers and believes they are more than capable of upsetting the odds.

“We are massive underdogs, yes, but we will stand tall, be positive and give it one hell of a go,” Day said.

“It’s true, Woking aren’t having the best of times of it at the moment, but you have to remember they are playing in a vastly stronger league than ours.

“I’ve watched about eight hours of them this week and they are a very strong team with quality management, quality players and, as they’ve proved this week by bringing in [John] Nutter and [Jayden] Stockley, fantastic buying power.”

But despite the underdog tag, Day insisted the pressure would not just rest solely on Woking’s shoulders.

“I’ll put pressure on them myself,” he added. “If we were playing Manchester United, then yes, the pressure is off, but no disrespect, this is Woking who are only one league above us so we have nothing to fear.

“Yes, this is a good draw for us, but this is no cup final for Farnborough. It’s about time we got something there and I’ll tell you, Woking will have to play well to beat us on Saturday.

“I’m not a manager renowned for parking the bus, as I showed there last Boxing Day, and it will be the same on Saturday. If we can step up from our seven or eight out of 10 rating in recent weeks and Woking have an off-day then we will win the game.

“I’ve got to try and throw something at Woking that they are not expecting but I do believe we have got to score because we’ll have to defend exceptionally well to keep a clean sheet.

“More importantly we’ve got to believe we can win the game otherwise we’ll be on a hiding to nothing.”

If Day can rally his troops in the same way as he did on Saturday against Staines, than Woking may have something to fear themselves.

The good news for Day is that he has a clean bill of health for the Kingfield trip, with Nic Ciardini now ready to challenge ex-Card Elvis Hammond for a starting place having recovered from injury.

Alfred Bosch is also over a back problem but he may find it difficult to dislodge Josh Huggins, who has impressed in his absence at right back.

Meanwhile, the Cards will have defender Mike Cestor, midfielder Lee Sawyer and striker Bradley Bubb available again, though centre back Jack Parkinson may be doubtful after limping off towards the end of last Saturday’s defeat to Alfreton.

No reason why Farnborough shouldn't win or at the worst get a draw.

Woking's defence has been suspect and Farnborough's speedy forwards will cause trouble.

Elvis"The King" Hammond is in great form and could be the one to upset Woking.
