Football: Blues boss set for another tough test
By Jon CouchJanuary 26, 2012
PLAYER/BOSS Craig Davis heaped praise on his makeshift Fleet Town side after they scrapped to a hard-fought away draw at play-off chasing Biggleswade on Saturday, despite missing a string of key players.
With top scorer James Taylor and keeper Ryan Pryce both suspended and trio Leigh Rumbold, Dan Rousell and Marc Vockins all out injured, Davis’ patched-up side still looked the stronger side in a hard-fought contest.
And they came closest to winning it when a Pat Cox effort was pushed on to the bar in the first half.
“We played well throughout,” Davis said. “This wasn’t a flukey 0-0 with us hanging on at the end. Quite the opposite in fact, with us probably the better side on the day.
“The lads who came in all did well, to show how well we are playing at the moment.”
Despite the result, Fleet still remain only one place above bottom side Marlow, and with tough home games coming up against third-placed Bedworth United on Saturday (January 28) and fellow high-fliers AFC Hayes to follow, Davis’ side will have to continue in their current form if they are to move away from a relegation battle.
“It’ll be hard, as Bedworth are one of the best sides in our division. But we’ll give it all we can and hopefully go one step further than we did at Biggleswade,” Davis added.
The good news is the return of Taylor for the Bedworth game, after his one-match ban, while Rumbold and Vockins are both expected to be fit.
FLEET: Shaw, Byres, Hutchings, Wilson, Scott, Davis, Pilgrim, Hunter, (Jannaway 89), Vicente, Cox, King. Not used: Lynch, Satlick, Bowles.
