Rob Carr has got Fleet Town motoring again after firing them to an unbeaten start to the new campaign.
The former Chertsey Town front man has netted twice in as many games having opened Fleet’s account in sensational fashion on Saturday (August 9) with a goal after just 28 seconds against big-spending Evesham United in a game that ended 1-1.
And he was at it again on Tuesday night (August 12) with a 14th-minute winner which helped dispose of newly-relegated Bashley – a result which sees Fleet occupy a top six position in the table after the opening week.
Indeed, Fleet’s winning margin could have been much wider against Bash but for a string of gilt-edged chances which went begging.
But for player-boss Craig Davis, it was the result that mattered most as he enjoyed victory against his former club.
“We made hard work of it but it’s the points that matter in the end,” Davis said. “I’m delighted with the win, and to get four points from our opening two games, is a great feeling, a great way to start the new season.”
Carr’s fine solo strike came after picking up a loose ball in midfield and sprinting past several defenders before rifling a firm low drive into the bottom right hand corner of the net giving keeper Callum Maher no chance.
Fleet pressed in search of a killer second with Simba Mlambo shooting just wide and Carr produced a fine save from Maher, while Fleet withstood a late onslaught to take the points.
It was much tougher for the Fleet defence and goalkeeper Ryan Pryce on Saturday when title-chasing Evesham, complete with prolific new striker Ashley Edenborough, from Swindon Town, gave them a tough early-season examination.
But Carr stunned the visitors with Step 4’s first goal of the season with a fine strike.
Fleet’s centre-back pairing of Lee Bowen and Dan Rousell were outstanding but they were eventually breached just before half-time when a free kick from the right was met squarely by Evesham skipper Matt Sysum who headed home.
So with back-to-back home fixtures now complete, Fleet hit the road twice in four days this week when Saturday’s trip to Bristol to take on Mangotsfield United is followed by a visit to Taunton Town on Tuesday night.
