Chelsea FC set off from their Cobham training ground to begin the defence of their Barclays Under 21 Premier League title at Aldershot's Electrical Services Stadium on Friday (August 15) - with a mouthwatering and free match against Patrick Vieira’s Manchester City.
Kick-off is at 7.05pm, with the match also broadcast live on Sky Sports 5.
Now managed by Adi Viveash, The Blues’ Academy also won the FA Youth Cup last season and feature several players with big futures.
Lewis Baker is the club’s 2013-14 Young Player of the Year and has already made his first-team debut, and he is joined in the squad by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, a classy England Under-19 midfielder, is tipped to make the step-up to Jose Mourinho’s first-team squad in the near future; defender Isak Ssewankambo, a Swedish Under-21 international; prodigious Belgian winger Charly Musonda is being touted as the next Raheem Sterling; and, perhaps most exciting of all, 17 year-old Ecuadorian winger Josi Quintero, who signed from Barcelona last month.
Vieira’s Elite Development Squad is also littered with young stars including French youth international midfielder Seko Fofana, winger Devante Cole (son of Newcastle legend Andrew Cole), England Under-19 international George Evans, Portuguese under-19 winger Jorge Intima, Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho, former Real Madrid midfielder Jose Angel Pozo, and last season’s top scorer, Jordy Hiwula.
Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-1 in last season’s Play-Off Final to secure the Championship. Teams are allowed to field three over-age players, plus a goalkeeper over the age of 21.
