Shots head into The Lions' Den

By Charlie Oliver
27/11/2008

Aldershot Town and their fans make the short trip to South London to take on Millwall in the FA Cup second round tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).

It’s an exciting prospect for The Shots’ fans and they are expected to come close to filling the 2,000 away seats at the New Den.

Should Aldershot spring a surprise then they could potentially face the likes of Manchester United or Chelsea in the next round.

Just to be in the hat for the next draw and bring Millwall back to The Rec for a replay would be a considerable achievement, however.

The Londoners have been rejuvenated under Gary Waddock’s friend and schoolboy acquaintance, Kenny Jackett, and are currently third in League One after beating Carlisle United 1-0 at home on Tuesday evening. They have, however, lost two previous cup encounters already at home this season, losing by the same 1-0 margin to Northampton Town and Colchester United in the Carling Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy respectively.

But that late, 1-0 win over Carlisle, was more typical of Millwall at home, where they have carved out a fine record this season, winning seven times in the league and losing just the once. While they don’t score too many goals at the New Den (13), Jackett’s men concede even fewer (seven).

Jackett has been at Millwall just over a year and, after seeing them to safety last season, his side's performances have surpassed expectations this season. He has proved astute in the transfer market and canny at substitutions and has Millwall pushing hard for promotion. One bold loan signing - the talented but wayward Tresor Kandol - will not effect Aldershot tomorrow however, as Kandol's parent club, Leeds United, have refused permission for the striker, who scored against Carlisle, to play.

Adam Bolder, on loan from Queens Park Rangers, can play, however. Zak Whitbread is out with an injured groin, while Danny Sender, another defender, is a long-term absentee with a dislocated knee.

Millwall have been at their most effective on the counterattack this season and, as the higher league side, at home, will be expected to have to adjust their tactics a little and take the game to Waddock’s men. Chester City held out for more than an hour against Millwall in the last round, before folding to a 3-0 defeat.

Waddock, who played for Millwall from 1989-91 said this week that his side go there with nothing to lose.

“Millwall are a very good side but we can go there and enjoy ourselves,” he said. “Just as we did in the Carling Cup at Coventry [Aldershot lost 3-1 to the Championship side]."

Waddock does, however, have fond memories of Millwall. They were the English club brave enough to offer the midfielder a contract after he had had to rebuild his career at Charleroi in Belgium once QPR had said he would most likely never play again after a knee injury.

Tomorrow is expected to be a special day for Aldershot 'keeper Nikki Bull too - unless he is struck down with illness or a last-minute injury, Bull will make his 300th appearance for The Shots.

Captain Rhys Day is almost certaon not to play for The Shots, due to a minor hamstring tear, although Waddock did say that he will give his injured players 'every opportunity' to be fit.

Kirk Hudson, who missed Tuesday's 2-0 League Two win over Lincoln City with a dead leg has a better chance of making the team. Should he fail a fitness test and with Andy Sandell cup-tied, Danny Hylton may return from a three-match ban and slot into wide midfield. Alternatively, Lewis Chalmers or Scott Donnelly could be recalled.

Assuming that Day is still out, then Ricky Newman is expected to deputise again at the back. He is also a former Millwall player and, unlike Waddock, played at the New Den, from 1995-2000. A team-mate at the tail end of Newman's Millwall career was Neil Harris and the 31-year-old is back at Millwall, needing just one goal to pass former Aldershot FC loanee Teddy Sheringham's all-time scoring record of 111 for The Lions.

As for The Shots, they are seeking a fifth win and clean sheet on the bounce. But, on this occasion, few Shots fans will complain should Waddock's side secure just a draw.
