Emelia Gorecka leads a field of AFD junior athletes at the European Junior Cross Country championships this weekend
Emelia Gorecka will attempt to regain the European Junior Cross Country title on Sunday as one of nine runners from Aldershot, Farnham & District AC to represent Great Britain across all six races in Belgrade.
Gorecka, in her final year as a junior, will be looking to go out on a high after losing her crown to Amela Terzic last December, finishing eight seconds behind in the silver medal position.
The Serbian athlete is too old to compete this time but both Maya Rehburg of Germany, who finished with the bronze last year, six seconds behind Gorecka, and Marusa Mismas of Slovenia, a further second back in fourth, are entered.
AFD’s Amy Griffiths is also in the field, making her debut at these championships.
Terzic, meanwhile, is entered for the U23s’ event where she will face another of her predecessors as junior champion.
Charlie Purdue will lead a GB side that includes two of her AFD colleagues, Lily Partridge (15th last year) and Jess Andrews.
Yet another former European junior cross country champion from AFD is three-time winner Steph Twell, and she is in the senior team for Sunday.
Andy Vernon won the senior men's trial from club mate Jonny Hay last week and he will lead Great Britain in the U23s.
Jack Crabtree, still an under-17, was selected after finishing sixth in the junior men's race at Liverpool last month.
