Fleet Town have been left reeling by the news that influential skipper Rob Marshall has followed in the footsteps of former boss Mark Dennis' and joined league rivals Eastleigh.

The move has come as a shock to many as Marshall, one of the few contracted players at the club, was never expected to leave due to a strong link with the club as son-in-law to director Roland Cant.

But fellow board member Steve Cantle wasn't quite aso shocked. He said: "Rob was a big favourite of Mark Dennis' so the club is not surprised that a move was made for him.

"We are disappointed that Rob has chosen to leave, but Eastleigh are working with extraordinary sums and it is something that we just cannot compete with."

The good news, however, for the Sky Blues is that Marshall is the only likely departure at present, with a new, young batch set to join them at Calthorpe Park.

In his first major interview, new boss Mick Catlin commented: "I have spoken to the existing players and they all seem happy to stay.

"I will be bringing in my own players, I have been looking at a lot of players and hopefully within the next week we will have them signed on and ready to play."

The main aim for the former Havant & Waterlooville development coach is to finish in the top half of the table — an ambitious target given that Fleet finished third from bottom last term.

He added: "We want to win every game and obviously I would like to say that we're going to be challenging for the title, but realistically a top half finish would be great.

"The cups are also still important as I would like for us to retain the Russell Cotes cup, and also have a good run in the FA Cup and FA Trophy as they will bring in the money and the publicity."

"The emphasis for this season is going to be on youth. The club is working on a small budget so we can't be buying in big names, the plan is to bring in the best young players in the local area to get them through the system and hopefully playing in the first team."

Catlin is due to start training with the team next Thursday (3rd) before kicking off their pre-season campaign on July 22 at home to Croydon Athletic.
