Boro blitz their way to glory

ANDY Clement has led his Farnborough side to the BGB Division One South & West title. On this page we take a look back over their rise to championship winners. You can look back at the season with our timeline and picture gallery, and vote for your player of the season.
August: The season began in a crazy fashion as Boro kicked off their first ever competitive game against Godalming Town. They raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to Ray Spence and a Rob Saunders double, but threw it away in the second half to finish 3-3, in a sign of some sloppy defending to come. The goals kept flying in at both ends in a fortunate 3-2 win over Bridgwater Town and another 3-3 draw, this time with AFC Hayes. But the arrival of experienced centre back Dave Woozley shored up the defence and they finished the month unbeaten and on a high with a 4-1 win at Windsor & Eton.
September: Boro started the month in disappointing style, their FA Cup adventure ending almost before it began at home to Chesham United. Saunders, who had scored five times in Boro’s first four games, picked up an injury that would keep him out for two months. But the rest of September went to plan, with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Abingdon in the league cup, and league victories over Winchester and Newport IOW keeping up their unbeaten start. A host of new players signed, including Neville Roach, who bagged the club’s first ever hat-trick in the 6-0 triumph over the Islanders, and Paul Harkness, who returned to the club from Basingstoke.
October: A flying start to the month saw a Ray Spence-inspired Boro cruise past Thatcham in the FA Trophy, before impressive back to back wins over Slough and Oxford City continued their good form. After sneaking past Swindon Supermarine in the FA Trophy’s next round, things turned sour as Boro ground out an unattractive 1-0 win to go top of the league at Marlow. Even the big-name signing of Marcus Richardson didn’t appease the supporters, who made their feelings clear in angry exchanges with the management. By the time Boro exited the league cup after a penalty shootout defeat at Godalming three days later, assistant manager Steve Moss had quit the club, citing differences with the board, supporters and certain players as his reasons.
November: The cracks in Boro’s armour worsened in November, crashing out of the FA Trophy at home to Windsor & Eton, and a first league defeat soon followed against Burnham at Cherrywood Road. But talisman Saunders returned to the starting line-up against Gosport Borough, and scored twice as Boro romped to a 5-0 win. They slipped up again on the road at Abingdon, but finished the month in fine goalscoring form as Saunders bagged another brace in the 4-0 win over Bracknell Town. Further new signings came in to boost the Boro ranks, with the arrival of winger Darren Wheeler in particular a key moment.
December: Starting the month at whipping boys Newport IoW was always going to be goal-packed, and the 7-0 win warmed Boro up for arguably their best display of the season as they thrashed Abingdon 6-1, gaining revenge for the bad-tempered defeat the month before. Their impressive form in the Hampshire Cup continued as they saw off the challenge of AFC Bournemouth to progress into the next round, and the enigma that was Spence had played his last game for the club after yet another falling out with the club’s management. Although they dropped points at home to Godalming, Boro finished the year in style. Nic Ciardini and Wheeler grabbed hat-tricks as they hammered AFC Hayes 7-2 in a perfect warm-up to the crunch Boxing Day clash with local rivals Fleet Town. They fell behind to an early Fleet goal, but Saunders netted a brilliant treble to inspire his side to a 5-1 derby win, and ensure that Boro finished the year top of the league.
January: Their spell at the top didn’t last long, as a New Year’s Day hangover saw Boro slump to a 2-0 defeat at Bridgwater. They picked themselves up to see off Didcot Town 4-1 thanks in part to a Richardson double before dropping points again in the 3-3 draw with Winchester. In came more new signings, most notably Byron Bubb from Burnham, but they failed to have the desired effect as a poor display at Taunton Town saw Boro lose again. But they rallied at the end of the month, Bubb scoring in the 1-0 defeat of Paulton Rovers, and then an impressive 2-0 win over Conference South high-flyers Eastleigh ensured a safe passage through to the Hants Senior Cup semi-finals.
February: With the season entering a crucial stage Boro at last began to show some consistency, and produced a solid performance to see off Burnham to begin the month. Michael Bartley arrived from Didcot, having already scored nearly 20 goals for the Railwaymen. Michael Barima was the hero a few days later, netting an injury time winner at Slough, but the tables were turned at home to Andover, when they conceded a sloppy late goal to draw 2-2. Clement steeled his troops and they saw off promotion rivals Oxford City 2-0 at Cherrywood Road before Wheeler nicked another late goal to make a long Monday night trip to Paulton worthwhile. Having almost gone the month unbeaten, Boro turned in their worst display of the season to lose 2-0 at Thatcham. Cue more angry reactions from dissatisfied fans.
March: Two big wins against struggling Taunton and Bracknell, the latter thanks to Bartley’s first two goals for the club, set Boro on the verge of moving to the league summit again. Saunders rediscovered his scoring touch as Boro eased past Thatcham and into top spot, and with their rivals dropping points, Clement’s men suddenly raced into an eight point lead. Bartley struck twice again as they cruised past Hillingdon Borough and another easy win followed against Marlow. It seemed Boro were strolling towards the title with seven games left, but they were forced to salvage a late draw at Uxbridge, and were then comprehensively beaten 3-0 by neighbours Fleet in a nightmare Easter. Their response to the doubters was emphatic as they finished the month in stunning fashion, hammering Andover 6-0 thanks to an inspired Wheeler, who scored four goals to leave them needing two wins from their last four games to clinch the title.
April: An easy win in the Hampshire Senior Cup semi-final against lowly United Services Portsmouth, thanks to goals from Bartley, Bubb and two from Saunders, got April off to the best possible start. A much changed side was knocked out of the Aldershot Senior Cup by local rivals Fleet, but other teams results in the league left Boro with the potential to seal the title against Gosport Borough, if all three of their rivals lost. Boro kept up their side of the bargain with a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Saunders and Wheeler, but other results meant that Clement's men needed a single point in their next game against Windsor & Eton to seal the championship in front of their own fans. They do just that, with Boro legend Paul Harkness stepping off the bench to find the equalising goal in a 1-1 draw with the Royalists that clinches the title. Wild, champagne-filled celebrations follow on the pitch among the fans, players and management as Boro toast their championship winning efforts.
