Odiham end Yateley's unbeaten run

12/ 6/2008

YATELEY’S two-year unbeaten run came to a sudden end on Saturday as they were beaten at home by local rivals Odiham & Greywell.

The home side had posted a highly competitive total of 271 in their innings, but Odiham replied in style to reach their target with six wickets still intact.

Yateley’s fine run without defeat stretches back to their Berkshire League days, and an unbeaten start to their Thames Valley Division 4B campaign had so far preserved their record.

And, despite losing opener Ben Viner early on to the bowling of Philip Thomas, a big-hitting effort from John Muir, who smashed four sixes on his way to 66, put them in a good position.

He was well supported by the in-form Manu Rawat, who made a well crafted 68, and as Scott Gore chipped in with 25, Yateley found themselves in a healthy position of 172-3.

Chris Petts flashed a quickfire 25, and despite wickets falling regularly after that, the scoreboard kept ticking over as they reached 271.

Given the big target, Odiham could hardly have made a worse start when Dave Hiscock was superbly run-out to leave them on 6-1.

But fellow opener Mike Oates dug in to make 55, and Odiham paced their innings brilliantly as Chris Turner also made a half century (61) to keep the runs flowing.

Yateley spinner Prabu Girirajan did make some inroads into the Odiham order, taking 2-30, but the visiting skipper Paul Voisey remained unbeaten on 56 to see his side home.

Odiham’s win lifts them to eighth place in the table, while Yateley dropped to fifth.

Yateley 2s were well beaten by 82 runs at Kidmore End in Division 6B, despite the best efforts of Aswin Velusamy who took four wickets, but the thirds battled to a creditable draw at 8A leaders Royal Ascot 3s.

Odiham & Greywell 2s were thrashed by 109 runs at home against Theale & Tilehurst in Division 7A. The visitors made 219-9 and then rattled through the Odiham order to dismiss them for 110.

Fleet’s sudden slump in form with the bat shows no sign of improving after they were bowled out for just 83 at Calthorpe Park against  high-flying Harefield.

It was marginally better than last week’s effort, when they were dismissed for 32, but it seems the honeymoon is over since their summer promotion to Division 1.

They were skittled out for their paltry total in just 37 overs, and although they picked up seven wickets, Harefield cruised to their required total of 86 from just 23 overs.

The defeat leaves Fleet in sixth place in the table, but they are still in touch with the leaders, just eight points behind Harefield who are in second.

Fleet 2s suffered a similar fate in Division 6B, thrashed by eight wickets at Purley on Thames 2s.

However, Bagshot recovered from their mauling last week to beat Wokingham 2s by 66 runs at home in Division 1.

Jeremy Davis led the way with 52 for Bagshot, helping them to a decent total of  245, which proved too much for Wokingham.

Ryan Hillas’ brilliant 114 was not enough for the visitors, who were stunned by some fine individual bowling efforts. Imran Sajid took 5-55, but Jon Atkinson starred with a superb hat-trick to finish with figures of 4-48 to dismiss their opponents for just 179.

Bagshot will be hoping the win kickstarts their campaign, although despite taking the maximum 25 points on offer, they are still bottom of the table.

Bagshot 2s tasted defeat, losing by six wickets at Finchampstead 3s in Division 4A, while the thirds picked up a good win at Basingstoke & NH, by 115 runs in 8A.

Finchampstead 2s enjoyed the most comfortable of victories in Division 2A, beating Farnham Royal 2s by six wickets.

They dismissed the home side for just 97, helped by some fine bowling from Wright, who excelled in taking 5-23, and they easily reached their total, making 99 for the loss of just four wickets.

The win lifts Finch up into sixth place in the table.

Finch’s 3s easily beat Bagshot 2s by six wickets, and in 7A, Finchampstead 4s thrashed Eversley 3s by 113 runs.

Another inept batting display from Cove saw them lose for the second time this season in Division 2B.

Accurate pace bowling from Andy Short, who took 2-32, and Ashok Singh who took a five-wicket haul, had reduced High Wycombe 2s to just 97-8.

But the visitors’ tail wagged, and a fine effort from skipper Andrew Downing, unbeaten on 45, helped his side to 171-9 from their 52 overs.

In response, Cove began well, with Simon Reed and Nick Randall guiding them to 70-1, but a middle order collapse left them floundering on 97-8. Simon Audsley and Andy Short dug in to take Cove 12 runs from victory with ten balls remaining, but the pressure told and Audsley was caught at extra cover to end his side’s hopes.

The defeat leaves Cove in fifth place as they seek an instant return to the top division.

Cove 2s snatched a thrilling win by just a single run against Newbury in 3A, but Cove 3s were well beaten by Henley 3s by 55 runs in Division 5A. The Cove Academy enjoyed another fine win, this time against Wokingham 4s and the fifth XI also claimed a narrow one-wicket win over Eversley 4s.

Aldershot picked up an emphatic eight-wicket win in Division 3A, thanks to some fine batting from youngster Craig Tilson.

Having dismissed the visitors Gerrards Cross 2s for 158, Aldershot cruised to their target as an unbeaten maiden century of 101 from 15-year-old Tilson saw them home with the loss of just two wickets.

The win puts Aldershot into seventh place, still undefeated after five matches.

Aldershot 2s were thrashed by Hillingdon Manor 2s in 5A, going down to a disappointing 99-run defeat, while Aldershot 3s just held their nerve to beat Theale & Tilehurst by six runs in Division 8A.

A fine individual display from Ian Dixon helped ensure that Eversley had the better of a draw with Thatcham Town 2s in Division 3B.

Dixon hit 78 as Eversley declared on 234-4 after 47 overs. He was well supported by Shane Green, who scored 56, but despite that bold declaration, they were unable to knock over their visitors.

Dixon excelled with the ball as well as the bat, taking 5-36, but Thatcham managed to hang on for a losing draw, finishing on 192-9. The 15 points keep Eversley in second place, just four points behind leaders Henley 2s.

In Division 5B, Eversley 2s cruised to a 135-run win over Marlow 2s, but in 7A Eversley 3s were well beaten by Finchampstead 4s by 113 runs. In Division 9, Eversley 4s narrowly lost out by a single wicket to Cove 5s.
