Danson Olympic dream still alive

Great Britain's women hockey team, including Alex Danson, from Hook, kept alive their medal hopes in Beijing after fighting back to earn a 2-2 draw with Argentina on Tuesday.

Argentina took an early lead thanks to Agustina Garcia and Alejandra Gulla made it 2-0 with a lifted shot.

But Britain scored twice inside five minutes in the second half to level. Sarah Thomas and Mel Clewlow claimed the goals.

Great Britain now face a make-or-break match against New Zealand tomorrow (Thursday) before final matches against Japan and the US.

The draw with Argentina followed an opening match thrashing for GB at the hands of reigning champions, Germany.

Danson admitted it is back to the drawing board after that 5-1 defeat.

The 2004 Athens gold medalists romped home 5-1 - Fanny Rinne and Eileen Hoffman both bagging doubles as Britain were dealt an Olympic size lesson in Beijing.

Danson's spirits were high after two warm-up wins against Pool B opponents New Zealand and hosts China. However the Germans proved too strong with Marion Rodewald sealing the win late on.

Crista Cullen netted Britain's only goal as their bid to end a 16-year Olympic medal drought faltered - but Danson has vowed to bounce back stronger against No.2 seeds Argentina on Tuesday.

"It is a disappointing result for us because we didn't take our opportunities when we should have," said Danson, aged 23 - who started on the bench after recovering from an ankle injury sustained against New Zealand.

Britain last tasted Olympic success in Barcelona in 1992 when they claimed bronze but haven't beaten Germany in a major tournament since the Atlanta Games in 1996.

And with only the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals GB coach Karen Brown admitted Danson and co. have it all to do if they are to finish ahead of Germany and Argentina.

"It didn't go very well and we ended up losing heavily," she said. "We started well and were into the game quite quickly but we didn't take our chances and they took theirs.

"Germany are the Olympic Champions and we are the number nine seeds so there is a reality check to be taken into account as well.

"We have a lot of work to do." The comeback against Argentina was certainly a start, especially as Argentina dropped points against the USA in their first game. That means that GB, should they win their remaining games, are likely to qualify behind Germany.

In other events, Farnborough gymnast Rebecca Wing suffered Olympic Games heartbreak as GB narrowly missed out on a place in the team final.

The 16-year-old put Britain’s medal bid back on track with a solid show on the beam after fellow teen Hannah Whelan had fallen on the same discipline.

Wing, who came sixth at the World Championships in Stuttgart in 2007, finished with 43.225 points - her best score was on the beam (14.575) but she did well on the vault and uneven bars too - as the squad, led by Beth Tweddle, battled for a final berth.

But lying in fifth spot with Russia, Germany, Ukraine, France and Brazil all still to compete there was to be no great escape as Japan, the eighth-placed team, finished on 233.175 points to edge out GB by just 0.75.

Coach Colin Still was frustrated with the performance, “I am disappointed that we didn’t manage to make eighth place and reach the team final," he said.

“There was more in the tank and they never released it, they produced maybe ten per cent less than in training. I think nerves got to them.”
