Sport: Snow and frost bite
December 21, 2009
AFTER a blanket of postponements at the weekend, attention turns to sport's hectic festive period - weather-permitting, that is.
Aldershot Town's game at home to Bradford City in League Two, scheduled for Saturday, was postponed as early as Friday lunchtime and Farnborough and Fleet Town's games followed suit the next morning.
Even rugby could not beat the the frost and the snow: Farnborough's derby at home to Aldershot & Fleet in Hampshire 1 did pass a 10am pitch inspection but was eventually called off at 1pm. The match will hopefully be played on January 2, if Aldershot can re-arrange a cup match.
And so attention turns to the Boxing Day (Saturday) games and beyond, assuming there is a thaw in temperatures.
Kevin Dillon's Aldershot are at home to Barnet on Boxing Day, before travelling to Hereford United two days later (December 28). Both games kick-off at 3pm.
Farnborough are on the road twice in two days in the Zamaretto Premier, at Bashley (December 26, 3pm) and then a re-arranged game at Stourbridge on Monday December 28 (3pm).
Fleet are at Godalming Town on Boxing Day in Ryman One South (3pm), before entertaining Walton Casuals in the evening on Tuesday December 29.
Boxing Day sees a glut of derbies in the Combined Counties League, including Badshot Lea at home to Cove and Sandhurst Town at home to Camberley Town.
Check this week's Aldershot News & Mail for a full list of fixtures and kick-off times.
One man who won't have any problems with the weather is James Wade.
The former Aldershot car mechanic starts his PDC World Championship bid on Wednesday evening at Alexandra Palace. Wade, the World No 3 but second favourite with the bookies, behind Phil 'The Power' Taylor, is up against Steve Brown in the penultimate first round match.
