Our Allegro was all right
31/ 7/2008
I must disagree with the article in Star of July 24, where the Austin Allegro was named Britain’s worst car.
As an ex owner of a “Rusting All Aggro’” I can say that this car took my family and I (two adults and two children) on numerous trips to Le Landes and the Cote D’Azur in France without any problems at all.
We even have memories of a scene outside the Casino in Monte Carlo with a Lamborghini on one side, a Rolls-Royce on the other and, in the middle, our red Allegro between the two giving the scene some class.
The nomination of the worst car is very subjective and, in many cases, is the result of experiences with the relevant car.
Our worst car, which had the name of a Mediterranean island, had the famous Porsche engine and the manufacturer was even the sponsor of the travel programme Wish You Were Here.
Unfortunately, we never could be there as we had to spend so much money on repairs we had to cancel the holidays.
Admittedly, it w as a lovely looking car, even when it was on the back of the recovery truck, where it seemed to spend most of its time. From that time on, to our family, the word SEAT is synonymous with the Spanish word for CRAP.
The SEAT Ibiza 1.8 is our nomination for worst car.

++ My personal unfavourite is either the Vauxhall Chevette or the Alfa GTV coupe. Do readers have any more nominations? Editor
