Petrol trouble
21/ 8/2008
I have to admit to my own embarrassment when I questioned the issue of free tickets for the airshow and then the Star published a letter proving that this had in fact been the case.
However: By what criterion was the decision made for the selection of those streets so blessed? Cross Street has the taxi rank – but they can still get in and out without any problem. Netley Street was blocked half way and so had some inconvenience; but Southampton Street and probably others had greatly more inconvenience than those listed.
My house backs onto the filling station next to the Holiday Inn and to get petrol I normally have to drive about 200 yards out of my house, left and left again. But when the airshow was on, I had to drive from Southampton Street to Alexandra Road, via several diversions, then left to the college, then left to the traffic lights on Farnborough Road by Barons, then left again to drive past the Swan and the Falcon to the filling station.
With a similar route to get out to the shops and to work, it was a great inconvenience, but we did not even hear of any free tickets until one of your readers raised the issue.
