Best Bites: Historic inn offers more than just pub grub

The Swan Inn serves up a delicious menu of popular dishes and healthy alternatives at a historic building with great views of Farnborough airfield and the biennial airshow

Far from the usual plain pub grub, The Swan Inn in Farnborough offers fresh, British food with a quality and varied menu.

The historic pub, in Farnborough Road, has been in the town for more than 150 years and current landlord, Lawrence Alexander, has run it for around the last seven years.

All the food is sourced locally and the popular lunch and dinner menus, which are changed every three to four months, offer healthy pub alternatives as well as daily specials.

The Swan took on a new head chef last week and a new menu was launched, featuring duck leg, seafood and chorizo paella, steaks and burgers.

The spacious pub offers a relaxed and friendly environment for locals and visitors.

The Swan backs on to Farnborough airfield and its outdoor gardens are the perfect viewing spot for the biennial Farnborough Airshow.

Mr Alexander said: “Because of the airport, we are right next to the Aviator hotel and we get lots of pilots visiting when they come over and stay here for their training.

“Some of the pilots love certain food here, one rings up beforehand to make sure we are serving the pork belly when he comes.

“It is a great place to be when the airshow is on as you can see all the displays and there is a great atmosphere.

“All of the staff here are very friendly and polite and very well-trained.”

During this year’s airshow, held last month, Mr Alexander raised funds for the local Rotary club, of which he is a member, by charging £20 for a car parking space for the day.

It was offered for those wanting to park up and watch the displays and donations were collected in charity buckets inside the pub.

Every weekend the Swan offers live entertainment from local singers and musicians.

Mr Alexander said: “On Friday and Saturday nights an area of the pub becomes the band area. And on those nights our outside area is very popular and is used for various functions. We recently had a party for 150 people and at New Year’s Eve we have a big party and tickets get sold out very quickly.”

On Sunday the pub will hold a summer ball in the garden, complete with DJs, an outdoor bar and marquee, bubble machines and beach balls.
