A singing sensation from Yateley has signed to Jay Z’s record label after they spotted her performances on YouTube.

Alexa Goddard, 25, said she was "on top of the world" after announcing the deal with record label Roc Nation just months before her debut single Marilyn is released.

“It still feels like a dream,” she said. “I signed the deal about a year and a half ago and had to keep it quiet until now.

“We didn’t want to announce it straight away, we wanted to see what the plan was and see what happened.

“Now the exciting thing is I have announced the deal and I am ready to go with a single in the summer.”

Alexa explained that she got Roc Nation’s attention through performances on YouTube. She developed the YouTube strategy with her manager Stew Mclean, who is also from Yateley.

Alexa said: “It literally all came thanks to the YouTube thing. It has been going for quite a while now. I have had my YouTube channel for four and half years.

“The idea behind it was to see if people liked my singing, and gauge what people thought. We managed to get so much reaction that the labels were getting in touch with us, which was great.”

And Alexa has already met the hip hop legend Jay Z.

“He was a really cool guy,” she said. “I was invited to a Roc Nation pre-Grammy lunch when I had just signed the deal.

“I went to LA and went to the pre-Grammy lunch and sure enough, in the corner was Jay Z, and Beyoncé, with Rihanna in the other corner and then there is just good old Lexy from Yateley.

“I wanted to go and introduce myself but I thought ‘I’m not sure’, but then as he went to leave I waved and he came over, and I said ‘I don’t know if you know, but you signed me in October and I just wanted to say thank you’.

“He said ‘yeah’ and gave me a high five.”

Alexa has performed at numerous venues in the UK and America including Wembley Arena and the Royal Albert Hall.

She said she always enjoys appearing in Yateley and played at Gig on the Green last year.

“I would love to come back,” she said. “I have also played at The Highwayman pub, I would love to come back and do that as well.

“Yateley is where I started and where I come from. I will never be too good for Yateley.”

The single Marilyn will be released on July 27.

Alexa said the tribute song to iconic Marilyn Monroe is a statement about not caring and "embracing who you are’".

The official music video is being shot in LA this month and the track will be available to pre-order from mid-May. It can currently be listened to on YouTube.

Alexa’s first live headline show is at Islington Academy, in London, on May 20. For tickets visit her website.
