Red Arrows and F-35 still due to appear at air show

Organisers of the show are confident the grounded fighter will appear alongside the RAF display team after one hit a bird on Wednesday during validation

Farnborough Air Show organisers are still expecting the F-35 Lightning II to appear at this year's display despite the fleet currently being grounded.

All 97 stealth fighters were grounded after one caught fire on a runway in Florida last month.

So far the US Department of Defence has not confirmed whether the plane will be appearing, however it is unlikely the F-35 will appear at this weekend's Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford.

Speaking on Wednesday night, a Farnborough International Limited spokesman said: "The F-35 is still planned to attend, we have not had any confirmations otherwise as yet."

Meanwhile the Red Arrows' appearance is also confirmed after organisers said the world-famous display team completed its validation on Wednesday (July 9) despite one of the planes hitting a bird.

Five fire engines attended Farnborough Airport at around 2pm after the Red Arrows stopped their flying.

Paul Burton, watch manager at Rushmoor fire station, said: "The pilot landed safely and he was unharmed."
