RAF Odiham pilot saves 20 despite being shot

AN RAF Odiham pilot has been hailed a hero after saving the lives of 20 people despite being shot between the eyes during a firefight in Afghanistan.

Flight Lieutenant Ian Fortune, who lives in Crondall, had flown in to pick up casualties as a firefight raged between American and Afghan forces and heavily-armed rebels in Helmand province.

The 28-year-old pilot, who had a television presenter on board filming a documentary, was advised to hold off as the ground battle was too fierce.
